The hackers who’ve hacked HBO are claiming responsibility for the Game of Thrones leak are threatening to release a lot more information, including the private data of some celebrities. In July, hackers released scripts and other material for upcoming episodes of Game of Thrones, as well as a HBO’s Ballers and Room 104. Oh no! Room 104 spoilers! Please don’t spoil Room 104 for me! HBO confirmed that hackers had stolen information from them at the end of July, saying “HBO recently experienced a cyber incident, which resulted in the compromise of proprietary information.” They’re downplaying the back, but the hackers claim they have 1.5 TERABYTES of information, and it goes beyond scripts. One screenshot in the first leak, labeled “Highly Confidential” by the hackers, listed folders such as “Penguin Random House,” ”Licensing & Retail,” ”Legal,” ”International” and “Budgets.” Another appears to contain the confidential cast list for “Game of Thrones,” personal cellphone numbers and email addresses for actors such as Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Emilia Clark. The hackers are asking for around $6 million dollars in bitcoin to stop the leak. While $6 million is a lot of money, consider the fallout of a similar breach. In 2014, Sony Pictures was hacked, seemingly by North Korean hackers. The data breach made public thousands of internal e-mail exchanges, corporate strategy documents, celebrity contact information, and even several finished motion pictures. Between lawsuits, new security, and lost profits, Sony Pictures lost and estimated $100 Million dollars to the leak. Unlike Sony Pictures, HBO is being blackmailed. The company, specifically Richard Plepler, either has to pay off the blackmailers or face even bigger losses and embarrassment. What do you think of the HBO hack?
