While trying to take a selfie at an art gallery, a woman knocked over several pedestals like dominos, ruining $200,000 in artwork. Man. Selfie. Jeez. I really hope that shot was worth $200,000. The accident occurred at the 14th Factory gallery in Los Angeles. The exhibit by artist Simon Birch, titled “Hypercaine” is a series of crowns made of different types of material, like wood, nylon, gold, and flowers. The gallery’s Instagram describes Hypercaine like this, “Inside a serene space, singular objects rest on plinths: these are crowns, or at least some resemblance of what a crown might be, presented as precious trophies or boons. The title of this work was inspired by the electronic dance track ‘Hypercaine’ by DJ Fresh. It is also a signifier of the ultimate human drug — power.” Oh.. Hypercaine, cocaine, power, crown… I get it. I think… I can see why you would want a selfie with all these crowns. Some of them look so intricate and expensive. So… let’s line them up like dominoes? In security camera footage, you can see the woman squat down to get a photo, lose her balance, and topple 200 grand in crowns. I see, it’s like performance art. The Selfie woman, she’s trying to get the best selfie, and she ends up destroying whole kingdoms. I get it. I think. My favorite part of this video is the gallery assistant who has absolutely no idea what to do. At first, he walks over, hands thrown up in the air. He can’t believe it. He’s like, “Why couldn’t she knock over the row of crowns made of wood!” Then he runs away, not really sure where to actually run. He either went to get help or run home. So, terrible goof-up right? Well, what if it was all part of the art? On the 14th Factory’s website, they describe themselves as “a monumental, multiple-media, socially engaged art and documentary experience conceived by … Simon Birch.” and says visitors to the gallery are “transformed into a central player in a collaboratively fabricated adventure and motion picture” So, if you visit the gallery, you’re part of a documentary? I see, it’s like performance art. The selfie woman, she’s trying to get the best selfie, and she ends up destroying whole kingdoms. I get it. I think. What do you think of the video?
