Emma Watson Accepts First Gender Neutral MTV Acting Award and More

  •  The 2017 MTV Movie and TV Awards were held Sunday, May 07 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA. Though the rain may have shut down the red carpet, the fun got started inside with host, Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect, Workaholics).

  •  The show opened with a Beauty and the Beast inspired song and dance featuring Adam Devine as the Beast, Haley Steinfeld as Belle, Rebel Wilson as Mrs. Potts, and more. Things were going pretty well at the start of the performance until Devine set the stage on fire (literally). Things kept heating up, but don’t worry. No tea cups or other kitchen utensils were hurt during the performance.  The awards show, previously known as the MTV Movie Awards from 1992-2016, saw a couple major changes this year. This year’s show marked the first time awards would no longer be differentiated based on gender. In other words, the awards were gender neutral leaving female, male, and gender non-binary actors competing for the top acting awards.

  •  The awards kicked off with Best Actor in a Movie. Nominees included Daniel Kaluuya for Get Out, Taraji P. Henson for Hidden Figures, and more. Emma Watson, however, took the top spot for her performance as Belle in Beauty and the Beast.  Let’s not forget about the fun performances of the night! Noah Cyrus performed Stay Together and totally sounded like big sis, Miley. It was shocking how much they sounded alike. Pitbull, J Balvin and Camila Cabello teamed up to perform their hit Hey Ma, and Big Sean (arguably dressed like Waldo in a striped t-shirt) followed with his song Jump Out the Window from his latest album.

  •  The night ended with the show’s highly anticipated categories: Movie of the Year and Show of the Year? Any guess on who might have won? Yes? No? Well, I’m going to tell you anyways.  Beauty and the Beast was awarded Movie of the Year, with Stranger Things winning Show of the Year.  Side note: if there was a category for cutest cast ever… the kiddos from Stranger Things would totally win that too.

  •  What did you think of the awards show? I do have to admit that making the categories gender-neutral made for a shorter show. As much as I love Adam Devine, I don’t know if I would have survived a 3-hour awards show.  Let us know what your favorite moments from the show were in the comments below or @WhatsTrending on Twitter!
