The Slow Mo Guys Fire a Machine Gun Through a Spinning Propellor

  •  If you’ve ever wondered what waxing leg hair or flamethrowers or gargling look like in super slow motion, Gavin Free and Daniel Gruchy, AKA the Slow Mo Guys, have you covered. Their channel has brought us some of the best of YouTube for over six years, and they show no signs of slowing down (ha!).  This time, they’re going all World War I on us to promote Battlefield 1, the new video game set during that era. In their latest video, the Guys fire a machine gun in slow motion — through a spinning propellor.  Here’s their original video:

  •  The video features a demonstration of some pretty amazing century-old technology. Back in WWI, engineers figured out a way to sync machine guns to propellors so that the guns fired through spinning propellors without actually hitting them.  Of course, as soon as you hear about something like that, you’ve got to see it in action — and action is what the Slow Mo Guys are all about. They demonstrate how the technology works by showing how a synced-up gun and propellor can both run simultaneously without clashing, and then showing what it looks like when they’re taken out of sync. (Spoiler: it involves some high speed bullet-on-propellor action.)  The only downside to this killer video is that it could have been even faster. Gavin and Daniel explain that they’re running their propellor at around 200 RPM, while an in-flight propellor from the era would likely be going at around 1200 RPM.  Still, the results are downright awesome. It’s like dodging rain drops, y’all.  What do you think? Would you fly in a prop plane with a sync mechanism like this? Let us know in the comments below or @WhatsTrending on Twitter!
