  •  See that face? That’s the face of a man determined. Determined to wring every last drop of comedy out of his character. Even if we never get that Step Brothers sequel we so richly deserve, John C. Reilly is going to make us laugh any way he can.  Kong: Skull Island premiered its first official trailer on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week, and there’s a lot to digest. Check out the original trailer below, and read on for our analysis after the jump.

  •  So here’s what we know about Kong: Skull Island. It’s an origin story for King Kong, and will be part of a shared universe with 2014’s Godzilla. Oh yeah, and it’s chock full of huge stars: Tom Hiddleston as Captain James Conrad (wow, a Heart of Darkness reference in a movie about going to the jungle with unexpected negative consequences? What are the odds?), Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson getting that post-Oscar money, John Goodman, and, of course, John C. Reilly.  The message that they seem to be going for in the trailer is, “Hey, Peter Jackson, it’s entirely possible to make a Kong movie that doesn’t bum everybody out!” The 2005 King Kong wasn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it was over three hours long, and Jack Black didn’t get to be nearly as funny as he can be.  This time around, it’s John C. Reilly as comic relief, and not only does he get the best line of the trailer (about Skull Crawlers), but he also gets its best visual moment. We’re all overdosed on special effects by this point, so as cool as their Kong looks ripping helicopters out of the sky, what really sells this trailer (for me at least) is the half-second shot of Reilly waving a katana around. Maybe — just maybe — this movie will live up to its trailer like Godzilla never quite managed to.  Kong: Skull Island is scheduled for release March 10, 2017. The wait begins…  What do you think?
