Facebook BS Alert: Kurt Cobain Didn’t Predict the 2016 Election

  •  Remember how last month we told you not to get your news from Facebook’s Trending algorithm, because there’s no reliable system to filter out BS? Hopefully, you didn’t take that information and decide, “Welp, guess I’ll get my news from Facebook friends instead of Facebook trends.“  Unsurprisingly, Facebook is still a big, booming, dumb echo chamber where, once you’ve picked a side, Facebook will continually feed you information telling you that you’re right. Wherever you fall on the political spectrum, Facebook is likely to show you plenty of stories that confirm your biases, polarize you further, and — as is the case here — fill your head with nonsense.  Kurt Cobain was a radical leftist, anti-racist, anti-homophobia activist, oh yeah, and musician. Who better to support the election of Donald Trump?  Back in late July, a pro-Trump Facebook page called Trump Train posted this (misspelled) meme in which Kurt Cobain appears to (very prematurely) endorsed Donald Trump for President. Here’s the original meme:

  •  Snopes jumped on it pretty quickly, debunking the assertion that Cobain ever said anything about Trump.  Then Trump got elected and the meme popped up again, getting shared tens of thousands of times. Sigh.  Of course, that’s not the only BS meme from the election. One of the most widely-spread fake memes is a purported quote from a 1998 People Magazine interview in which Donald Trump claims Republicans are “the dumbest group of voters in the country.” Snopes to the rescue again: it’s totes fake.  Oh well. At least we’re not getting 2008’s fake memes about the President being a Kenyan Muslim as much anymore. Good times.  What do you think was the worst fake meme of the 2016 election cycle?
