Macklemore Addresses Drug Addiction in New Music Video
I must admit, when Macklemore beat out Kendrick Lamar at the Grammys, I completely took him off of my radar. Yes, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis did make incredibly successful music at the time, but nothing even close in quality to that of Kendrick Lamar’s. Post “Thrift Shop,” it seems as though the rapper has continued to find himself in the middle of some controversial topics. Almost one year ago, Macklemore released a song targeting racism and #BlackLivesMatter called “White Privilege II.” The rapper has recently become the center of discussion once again, but this time, it’s a lot more personal. Just yesterday, Macklemore released the music video for his song “Drug Dealer” featuring Ariana Deboo… not Ariana Grande. Though many find it interesting that the rapper is crying naked in the shower throughout the video, that’s not the point! The song, more importantly, targets prescription drug abuse and Big Pharma. Since Macklemore has publicly acknowledged his addiction history with prescription drugs, some fans have found his message incredibly touching, while others think the subject matter is a little much. Here’s the original video from Macklemore:
