Audit Finds Trump Never Donated to 9/11 Charities, Despite Promise

Donald Trump is a noted liar and promise-breaker. Now, according to the New York Daily News, Trump broke at least one promise about donating to 9/11 relief charities. This is after Politico revealed that Trump said, on 9/11, that his building was now the tallest in Manhattan. This comes the same week Trump attack dog Rudy Giuliani said Hillary Clinton wasn’t there after the attacks. Photos released showed her right next to him on 9/12. A report from New York City Controller Scott Stringer requested by the NYDN revealed this latest news. Trump had in 2001 promised to donate $10,000 as part of a charity drive by Howard Stern. He has previously bragged about helping out on and after 9/11, including this donation. Says New York City comptroller Scott Stringer: “For the periods covered by the audits, we did not find any record of a donation from Trump himself or a Trump entity to either the Twin Towers Fund or the New York City Public/Private Initiatives Inc.” Trump went on the Howard Stern Show on October 10, 2001. Stern and co-host Robin Quivers both thanked him for making a donation to their fund (the NYC Public Private Initiative, which used the “Howard Stern Relief Fund” as a “marketing hook” at the time), and Trump did not dispute their claims. Though the Controller’s office told the Daily News that they are “unable to conclude definitively that Trump never gave to either” the Twin Towers Fund nor the New York City Public/Private Initiatives, Inc., the two main funds set up to accept donations in the wake of 9/11, neither Trump nor any Trump entity (including the embattled Trump Foundation) gave to either fund through mid-2002. In other words, Trump pledged to donate $10,000 to the NYC Public Private Initiative, did not do so, and accepted praise for doing so. This is not, under the most stringent definition, a lie, but it’s certainly a badly broken promise. The Daily News went on to review every Form 990, a nonprofit entity and charity financial disclosure form, for the Trump Foundation from 2001 to 2014. They found only one donation to 9/11-related causes: to an effort using questionable methods. That “charity” was the New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Fund, a Tom Cruise-founded group that used Scientology methods to help rescue workers. That donation was for $1,000. Not exactly generous. For more stories like this, follow @WhatsTrending on Twitter.
