Why Are People So Obsessed With Dabbing?

Dabbing, the latest trend in dancing and in daily society, has some confusing roots. This video attempts to clear it up. Don’t worry, unlike BuzzFeed, we’re not going to ask questions like “If my dab is on fleek, am I lit?” Many credit the Atlanta hip-hop/R&B dance scene, especially artist/producer Rich the Kid, with the invention of the dabbing. The move is thought to have come about around 2012. It became Cam Newton’s celebration of choice last year, as he used it after touchdowns or great plays. He was made fun of for it throughout the season, including in Super Bowl 50, when the Denver Broncos defense gave him few reasons to dab by absolutely smothering his Panthers with their defense. Bow Wow, formerly Lil’, explained it as being marijuana-related, and that dab is a highly potent form of the drug. Dabbing in this sense refers to smoking or vaporizing hash oil, which produces a strong high. It likely doesn’t, however, explain the origin of the dance move. As explained in the video above, the internet community has come out to say that the dance move has nothing to do with that sort of dabbing. So why are people so obsessed with it? Beats me. It appears at first glance to be yet another fleeting pop culture dance phenomenon, like the Macarena, the Soulja Boy dance, and the good ol’ Charleston. Whether it sticks around for another month or another decade, one thing’s for certain: if you’re out of high school, the dab is likely a source of serious bafflement to you. What do you think?
