YouTube Recruits Top Creators to Remind Young People to #VoteIRL

  •  Right after Joss Whedon recruited traditional Hollywood celebrities to remind you to vote (for Hillary Clinton), YouTube has thrown its hat into the voting PSA ring with the help of some of the biggest stars in the digital world.  This week, the YouTube Spotlight channel uploaded a video encouraging viewers to “vote IRL,” i.e., actually go to a polling place or send in an absentee ballot, rather than just sit around and yell about politics on the internet. The video features popular creators from all sides of the political spectrum, from The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur to evangelical YouTubers Blimey Cow to Julie “TokenLibertarianGirl” Borowski, all with the same message: you gotta freakin’ vote, young folks.  The cast of the video is rounded out with such big names as Hannah Hart, Bethany Mota, Kingsley, Philip DeFranco, Dulce Candy, Hank Green, Laci Green, Anna Akana, Eric Ochoa, Franchesca Ramsay, and Mark Watson.  In addition to the headlining video, YouTube is spotlighting multiple creators with its Register to Vote in 1:34 campaign. Since it takes, on average, a minute and 34 seconds to register to vote, YouTube is encouraging creators to make videos that are 1:34 in duration and aimed at getting their audience to exercise their voting right.  Hopefully this goes better than YouTube’s last Spotlight campaign, which ended up drawing out homophobes by the thousands.  What do you think? Will this affect the election, or is YouTube’s audience too young to vote? Let us know in the comments below or at @WhatsTrending on Twitter!
