Dr. Oz, America’s Favorite Quack, Agrees to Be Trump Puppet

  •  You guessed it. Big D has left the kids table and sat down with America’s go-to TV doc. Disclaimer: This is also the same doctor who debated the toxicity of apple juice (yes, the drink) with the FDA.  In case you’re one of the many who still trusts Dr. Oz for medical advice, dear god please don’t. Mashable has an excellent breakdown of why Dr. Oz is one of America’s worst offenders when it comes to medical misinformation. If you prefer your quack alerts in video form with jokes, there’s also Last Week Tonight’s take:

  •  If you don’t have time for all that, just know this: According to the British Medical Journal, an astonishing 54% of claims made on Oz’s show are unsupported by published studies.  In other words: Donald Trump may have picked the worst possible way to tell the country he’s healthy. All he needed was Dr. Oz’s last shred of integrity to give him a platform, and he got it.  A few weeks ago, Donald Trump’s team booked a slot on the Dr. Oz Show, and made plans to evaluate the Presidential candidate’s overall physical health. (Note: This was before Hillary Clinton came down with pneumonia, so that seems to be just a strange coincidence.) Dr. Oz asked Trump why he had not yet been transparent with his medical records, and Trump responded by pulling two letters from his personal practitioner Dr. Harold N. Bornstein out of his pocket. (This is the same Dr. Bornstein who once wrote that, if elected, Trump would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency” — and later admitted he wrote the four-paragraph essay in five minutes.)  Cue a stunned Oz being handed privileged information about Trump’s prostate.  According to Bornstein, Donald Trump is a 70-year-old man with the following medical records:  He weighs 236 pounds, and said (to Oz) that he wanted to lose fifteen. By BMI (Body Mass Index) standards, he is on the verge of obese. Oz said he was “slightly overweight”. He takes a statin for cholesterol. He doesn’t go to the gym, but he considers his speeches “exercise”. Hmm. His father had Alzheimer’s disease, which would put him at higher risk for the condition, but because his father only showed symptoms in his 80’s, Trump is at normal risk level. He recently had a colonoscopy with no polyps. Icky, but important. He had a normal prostate exam, and his testosterone levels are normal. Apparently this is not just for man points; supposedly if you have higher testosterone levels you are more equipped to handle a high-stress job. AKA being President. He gets screened for cancer every year, which Oz says is “excessive”.  And there you have it. We now resort to daytime-television talk shows to vet our presidential candidates. ‘Murica. What do you think? Complete utter nonsense or effective campaign strategy?
