Earlier this week, TMZ reported that Cornell “Nelly” Haynes, Jr. has an outstanding federal tax lien of nearly $2.5 million. (He also owes around $150,000 in state taxes.) SPIN Magazine did some number crunching and found that, if Nelly gets every single cent of his streaming revenues, and Spotify pays him the maximum cost per stream, his fans will need to listen to his songs at least 287,176,547 times. When SPIN revealed their findings in a tweet that boiled down the story to Nelly’s most popular song, “Hot in Herre,” Twitter reacted swiftly:

Seems like a lot of people have nostalgia for the summer of 2002. (I’m more of a “Country Grammar” fan myself.) The response to SPIN’s tweet was so big that #DoItForNelly, #GetNellyOutofDebtParty, and #HotInHerreStreamingParty were all shared on Twitter, and the social media giant even devoted a Twitter Moments page to fans’ efforts. Unfortunately, Spotify has specifically been known to look down on stunts like this. Funk band Vulfpeck released an album called Sleepify exclusively on Spotify back in 2014 — an entirely silent album that they encouraged fans to play on repeat while they slept so that they could earn Spotify royalties from it. Spotify took the album down. What do you think? Will fans successfully play “Hot in Herre” nearly 300 million times? Let us know in the comments or @WhatsTrending on Twitter!
