Nickelodeon Introduces First Married Openly LGBT Cartoon Couple
LGBT representation in animation is a pretty new thing. There are a few LGBT-focused cartoons, like indie web series McTucky Fried High, and The Legend of Korra drew a lot of attention for (spoiler alert for something that happened almost two years ago) ending by confirming a lesbian relationship between two main characters. But there’s still a lot of progress to be made — and Nickelodeon is starting to make it. The July 20th, 2016 episode of new Nickelodeon series The Loud House will be the first animated children’s series to feature a married LGBT couple. Here’s a clip from the episode that was released in advance of its airing:

While The Loud House isn’t the first kids’ show to feature a canonically gay couple — that distinction goes to Disney Channel series Good Luck Charlie — it is the first animated kids’ show to feature a canonically gay married couple. Shows like Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Clarence have hinted at having gay characters in the past, and Gravity Falls and the aforementioned Korra have had out gay characters. This is the first time, however, that we’ve seen such a positive, open portrayal of a same-sex relationship. And we’re here for it. Making progress, y’all, one step at a time. What do you think? Are you glad we’re seeing more positive LGBT representation in kids’ TV, or are you full of hate and vinegar? Let us know in the comments below or @WhatsTrending on Twitter!
