Model Dani Mathers Body-Shames Woman in Locker Room on Snapchat

  • There’s definitely an ugly person in this picture, but it’s not the woman getting photographed in the locker room of her gym. Dani Mathers, 2015 Playmate of the Year, pissed off most of the internet and may wind up with criminal charges after she took a picture of a woman changing in the locker room at L.A. Fitness and posted it to Snapchat with the caption, “If I can’t unsee this than you can’t either.” At best, this is blatant body-shaming and completely disrespectful to the woman, who was just trying to have a workout and get on with her day. At worst, this is illegal. And people online didn’t hesitate to call Mathers out for it.

  • Musician and body-positive activist Meghan Tonjes said in a recent video that she was “infuriated but weirdly numb” about yet another body-shaming incident, and drew a parallel between this story and the ongoing argument about trans people using bathrooms.

  • “There’s this weird disconnect we have, especially with social media, where we share everything we see all of the time and feel all of the time, and have lost a little bit of empathy I think, especially when it comes to people in private places just existing. It’s so interesting to me that we have all these conversations going on right now about who’s in our bathrooms and what are they going to do — and you know who we have to worry about? Body-shaming pieces of shit like this.” Now the LAPD is investigating, and Mathers may face charges. The L.A. Times has the latest:  LA Fitness on Friday responded to Mathers’ action by permanently revoking her membership at all of its health clubs. “Her behavior is appalling and puts every member at risk of losing their privacy,” said Jill Greuling, the company’s executive vice president of operations. The company would not say at which gym the incident occurred. Greuling said law enforcement was notified about the matter.  “Our written rules are very clear: Cellphone usage and photography are prohibited in the locker rooms,” Greuling said. “This is not only our rule, but common decency.”  Mathers has also been suspended from her radio job on the “Heidi and Frank” show on KLOS 95.5. Since then she has taken down her Twitter and Facebook accounts and posted an apology to Snapchat, saying she was trying to send the picture in a private conversation and accidentally made it public because she’s new to the app.

  • “I just wanted to acknowledge a photo that I accidentally posted here on Snapchat earlier today, and let you guys know that that was absolutely wrong, and not what I meant to do,” she said. “I have chosen to do what I do for a living because I love the female body, and I know that body shaming is wrong and that’s not what I’m about. It’s not the type of person that I am.” Of course, it’s not much better if she’s the type of person to privately mock someone to her friends rather than doing it in public. What are your thoughts?
