Is Sony Paying People to Give “Ghostbusters” Good Reviews??!?

  • The time has come, fellow nerds — the lady-centric “Ghostbusters” reboot starring Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Kristen Wiig, somehow the most controversial movie of the year before the script was even finished, is about to hit theaters. The first reviews are in, and it looks like the consensus is “Not bad! Not awesome, but not bad.”

  • “Ghostbusters” currently has a healthy 74% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with most top critics enjoying a decent night at the movies. Alison Willmore from Buzzfeed News says the comedians “are so good together — and in ways that are distinctively theirs and not recycled from the past — that their message of not giving a damn resonates better than the movie’s underwhelming climax.” Robert Abele from The Wrap says “This new A-team of ghostbusters are fresh and funny enough to have earned space in the summer comedy firmament.” And at the New York Times, Manohla Dargis calls the movie “cheerfully silly” and “a lot of enjoyable, disposable fun.” Seems like standard fare for a summer blockbuster — the actors are entertaining enough to save the movie, the plot is kinda average, but you don’t really care either way because you just want to have a good time and forget about it. (Are people ranting for weeks because “Independence Day: Resurgence” was mediocre nonsense? No, no they’re not.)  But because the movie’s all-female lead cast was met with a tidal wave of chauvinistic nerd-rage on the internet, expectations for “Ghostbusters” went sky-high. Feminist viewers felt obligated to watch the movie as a political statement in defense of women in comedy, while sexist dudes on Reddit and 4chan would not be satisfied until it went down in flames, universally panned as the biggest flop in movie history. And for some of those dudes, these “it was pretty good” reviews can mean only one thing: Sony is paying the critics off.

  • The only thing funnier than this pointless outrage is all the quality snark it’s getting in response.
