It’s been a pretty awful week. After back-to-back killings of black men by police and then the attack on police officers at a protest in Dallas, our collective grief and anger over gun violence and racial issues have been stretched to the breaking point. And for the black community in particular, every glance at the headlines or social media trends right now is a reminder that they can’t guarantee safety for their children. To make things slightly less bleak, writer and podcaster Heben Nigatu created the #CarefreeBlackKids2k16 tag — a little corner of social media full of black children laughing, playing, goofing off, being with their families and friends, all the things that children should be doing instead of facing tragedy and injustice.

It seemed to be exactly what a lot of people needed, because the trend took off and attracted some of the biggest names in social media. It’s both a chance to let your heart heal, and a reminder of what’s at stake.
