YouTubers Read Mean Tweets About Themselves

Jimmy Kimmel’s “Mean Tweets” segment, in which celebrities read mean things people have tweeted about them out loud, somehow always manages to be that proper balance between funny and kind of sad, which I’d imagine is the point. The latest edition exclusively features new media stars, including YouTubers Grace Helbig, Tyler Oakley, and Lilly Singh. These are our people! It should be upsetting to watch them read people being jerks to them! But the fascinating thing is that it’s really, really not. And it’s not amusing either. It feels standard. And that’s probably because YouTubers, more than any other type of “celebrity,” have to read hateful comments every single day: Twitter, YouTube, Facebook… pretty much any social platform that allows two-way communication. We’ve all seen the sh*tty comments, and we’ve probably gotten into fights with “fans” over them, defending our faves. And we’ve seen them read and react to negative things regularly. So this is utterly non-jarring. Which is pretty freaking jarring in and of itself. Yay, our world. Have you ever tweeted something unnecessarily mean at a celebrity and regretted it? Not regretted it? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter @WhatsTrending.
