Hank Green Founds ICG, First Guild for Internet Creators

  • Writing in Medium, long-time YouTuber and co-founder of VidCon Hank Green has announced the birth of the Internet Creators Guild, the first guild for creators of online video. This is a turbulent time for online video creators; with the untimely passing of Christina Grimmie and the resulting security concerns at VidCon and other meet-and-greet events, YouTubers everywhere are welcoming the guild with open arms.  In the post, Green lays out the tenets of the ICG, announces the Board of Directors and Advisory Board members, and announces the two things he’s contributing to the ICG: $50,000 in funds raised from VidCon, and a member of VidCon’s staff — Laura Chernikoff, who will be the ICG’s executive director.  Green goes on to write that he will not run the organization, leaving that to Chernikoff, the Board of Directors, and the Advisory Board.  The Board of Directors includes such prominent digital figures as online content creator Anna Akana, entertainment lawyer Jonathan Katz, and Australian YouTuber and marketing expert Wengie. Green, plus Rooster Teeth co-founder Burnie Burns, YouTuber Akilah Hughes, YouTuber Casey Neistat, and UK vlogger Louise Pentland make up the Advisory Board.  Creators can apply to join the Internet Creators Guild here, and follow the newly-created guild’s Twitter here. So far, the response on Twitter has been positive, with creators such as Aureylian, Shay Carl, and more weighing in. Here are some of their tweets, starting with Green’s tweet, which has been favorited over 1,000 times:
