Game of Thrones Ending in Two Short Seasons?!

  • The latest season of Game of Thrones is gearing up to air, but producers are already saying seasons 7 and 8 could possibly be an end to the series, and even worse a short one at that. In an interview with Variety, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss stated that they’re considering ending the story of Westeros in just 13 more episodes. Season 7 will be a short seven episodes and season 8, potentially the final season for the series, will be just a paltry six episodes. Benioff stated, “I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We’re heading into the final lap. That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that’s what we’re looking at.” According to Variety, the numbers might be a bit “premature” since the duo is only just starting to outline plans for the remaining seasons, however it is expected that the following seasons will be shorter then ten episodes. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo added, regarding the plan to end the show in just two short years, “That’s my understanding from them right now, those have been the conversations we’ve had because where these narratives go, it feels like another two years to them. As a television executive, as a fan, do I wish they said another six years? I do. I’m always an optimist, and I do believe we will figure this out.” Weiss and Benioff explain the potential shortening of the seasons saying they can’t continue to produce 10 episodes of the show at the heavy pace and schedule needed to live up to the standards of the show, adding “It’s crossing out of a television schedule into more of a mid-range movie schedule.” At the moment, none of this is written in stone, but the showrunners are hoping for the shorter-episode scenario.
