EgyptAir Passenger Scores a Selfie with Deranged Hijacker

  • It’s an unfortunate possibility that we all need to consider these days: if a crazy guy wearing a bomb belt hijacks your plane and threatens to kill everyone on board, what should you do? “Try to get a selfie with the hijacker” is … certainly one option.

  • Ben Innes was among the 62 people on board the EgyptAir flight from Alexandria to Cairo that was forced to land in Cyprus after an Egyptian named Seif Eldin Mustafa threatened to blow up the plane.  Fortunately the bomb appeared to be fake, and Mustafa eventually let everyone go after a hostage standoff and some unhinged demands to see his ex-wife. Innes and two other Brits were the last people released, and after half an hour of sitting around waiting, he thought to himself, “Why not ask for a selfie?”  “I’m not sure why I did it, I just threw caution to the wind while trying to stay cheerful in the face of adversity. I figured if his bomb was real I’d nothing lose anyway, so took a chance to get a closer look at it. I got one of the cabin crew to translate for me and asked him if I could do a selfie with him. “He just shrugged OK so I stood by him and smiled for the camera while a stewardess did the snap. It has to be the best selfie ever.”  It got a bit awkward later when he texted his mother and she frantically begged him not to do anything to draw attention to himself; and now security experts are calling him reckless and saying he risked passengers’ lives with the stunt.  But hey, epic selfie, bro. Today a video has emerged of the surreal moment when Innes asked for the picture, along with two flight attendants:
