Emilia Clarke Defends Game of Thrones Against Series’ Sexist Comments
With the sixth season of Game of Thrones premiering in less than a month, you won’t be able to go longer than five minutes without hearing about dragons, ice people, giants, or winter and how it’s still coming, apparently. The fantasy epic has risen to such acclaim that every decision showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss make is analyzed with a fine-tooth comb. One of the hottest debates over Game of Thrones is whether or not the series is sexist toward women and if it harbors an anti-feminist agenda. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, actress Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, first of her name, Queen of Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, the Unburnt, and Mother of Dragons, spoke out against these comments:
“There are women depicted as sexual tools, women who have zero rights, women who are queens but only to a man, and then there are women who are literally unstoppable and as powerful as you can possibly imagine. So it pains me to hear people taking Thrones out of context with [an] anti-feminist spin — because you can’t do that about this show. It shows the range that happens to women, and ultimately shows women are not only equal, but have a lot of strength.”
Let us know in the comments section below if you stand with Khaleesi. Will you be catching this season of “Game of Thrones” or has the show lost its edge? And in case you missed it, a new promo for Season 6 debuted during the NCAA men’s basketball tournament:
