Wonder Woman Details Revealed!
Entertainment Weekly revealed an exclusive image this morning of the ladies of Themyscira! Diana (Gal Gadot) will retain her status as the only child born and raised on Themyscira, and the women who are responsible for her tough demeanor are just as badass. Diana’s mother, Queen Hippolyta, is played by Connie Nielson. She’s the lovely woman just the right of Diana in the photo. On her right is General Antiope, played by Robin Wright and to Diana’s left is Antiope’s lieutenant, Menalippe, played by Lisa Loven Kongsli. Superhero movies have recently found themselves under fire regarding the impractical costuming for their female characters, and Wonder Woman is no stranger to this criticism. The recent image has already drawn ire, but the film’s costume designer Patty Jenkins has addressed those issues prior to critics opinions. “To me, they shouldn’t be dressed in armor like men. It should be different. It should be authentic and real – and appealing to women,” Jenkins continued, remarking on the impracticality of wearing heals into battle, “It’s total wish-fulfillment. I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time – the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.” She also added that the warriors have flats for heavy fighting. People have voiced complaint regarding the inclusion of the “wristbands” but those can be considered wrist guards since they’re not bands but fully cover the upper arm (you know, in case a sword slams into them). Still, one does have to question the need to expose the thighs while in battle considering there’s a major artery there. I guess for the ladies of Themyscira, this isn’t a concern at all!
