How to Prove Humans Evolved From Primates

  • Forty-two percent of Americans say that humans were created in their present form within the past 10,000 years – so Vox decided to prove them wrong, pointing out the evidence of evolution in their own bodies. That’ll freak ‘em out. “Your body is a temple, but it’s also a museum of natural history,” this Vox Observatory video explains. “Look closely and you’ll see parts that aren’t there because you need them, but because your animal ancestors did.” It turns out there are plenty of vestigial structures in the human body that strongly suggest our ancient ancestors used to live in trees — things like the Palmaris longus some people have in their forearms, a tendon which helped our ancestors to climb; muscles around the ear originally designed to move it around to figure out where a sound is coming from; getting goosebumps when you’re cold to raise our mostly-nonexistent fur; and even our tailbones, which used to develop into actual tails. It’s the kind of thing that’s really interesting and satisfying to science geeks, and really irritating to Intelligent Design supporters.
