  • Man, I’m going to miss Michelle Obama. What future First Lady or First Dude will be cool enough to drop a hip-hop single featuring Missy Elliot, Janelle Monae and bunch of other pop stars promoting girl power? Obama was a music keynote panelist at SXSW in Austin, Texas, sitting down with Sophia Bush, Diane Warren, Missy Elliot and Queen Latifah to discuss women in the arts, education and society. They shared the different pressures and obstacles that they’ve faced throughout their careers, from people doubting Obama would succeed because she’s black, to Elliott being told she wasn’t the “right size” to have a hip-hop career. It was a nice setup for Obama’s announcement of a new single, “This Is for My Girls,” written by Diane Warren and featuring Missy Elliott, Janelle Monae, Kelly Clarkson, Chloe and Halle, Jadagrace, Kelly Rowland, and Zendaya.  It’s a pretty empowering song, with a “stand up and be heard” message and a definite Beyonce vibe. Obama doesn’t sing herself, but she’s putting her considerable influence behind the song to raise awareness for the 62 million girls worldwide without access to education. The full single is available on iTunes.
