A Woman’s Breast Photo Has a Small But Crucial Warning Sign

  • A woman’s decision to post a picture of her naked breast on Facebook could end up saving people’s lives. Kylie Armstrong from Melbourne, Australia was diagnosed with breast cancer in February after she noticed three subtle dimples on the underside of her breast. Even though she felt no lump, she knew this wasn’t normal and decided to have her breast checked by a doctor. Sure enough, a mammogram found a cancerous mass deep inside her breast, close to the muscle. She and her family were shocked and upset – but even as she struggled to process the news, Armstrong knew that her experience could help other people.

  • In a detailed Facebook post, she pointed out and described the faint dimples that appeared when she raised her arm – a cancer warning sign that many people aren’t aware of, with all the emphasis of checking for lumps in the breast. “I am sharing this because I hope I can make people aware that Breast Cancer is not always a detectable lump,” she wrote. “Please go straight to your GP if you notice ANY change in your breast. It could save your life. Please share to spread awareness.” Armstrong later told Buzzfeed: “When I was telling my friends and family everyone asked, did I feel a lump? I didn’t, the GP didn’t. None of them had any idea that dimples could be a sign that there was cancer inside the breast. I hoped that by putting the post up it might help at least one person.” The post seems to be helping a lot more than just one – it’s been shared over 250,000 times and hundreds of people are responding with their own breast cancer stories.  She has since had surgery to remove the cancer mass and said the outlook is good. “If I had ignored the dimples, it might be a different story.”
